The project
Decentralized increase in energy density and centralization of large-scale upgrading of pyrolysis. Pyrolysis is a form of dry distillation in which a composition is heated in an anaerobic environment. The lack of oxygen is important for the material not to catch fire. The result of the pyrolysis is a separation of the material into different components.
The assignment
COWI is involved in a project for the Norwegian Xynergo AS, where wood from pine-forest is converted into oil by pyrolysis. The oil can be used for the production of electric energy or for heating.
The next phase of pyrolysis is bio-oil that can be used as crude oil to produce synthetic diesel. By using a process called Rapid Thermal Process (RTP)™ it is possible to convert second generation low-grade biomass into high-grade pyrolysis, which can be converted into transportation fuel. COWI Management is responsible for project management and cost calculation in the project.
